The H2 breath test is used to diagnose intolerances to lactose (lactose intolerance), fructose (fructose malabsorption) or sorbitol (sorbitol intolerance), as well as to diagnose bacterial colonization of the small intestine.
The total duration of the respective test is approx. 2.5 hours. Depending on the question, a defined amount of lactose, fructose, sorbitol or glucose is dissolved in water and drunk by the patient. In the case of intolerance, the substance is not or only partially absorbed in the body. The rest is broken down by intestinal bacteria. Hydrogen (H2) is released in the process. This can be measured in the exhaled air. Four measurements are taken at intervals of 30 minutes.
You cannot do the 4 tests (lactose, fructose, sorbitol or glucose) at the same time on the same day. Only one specific breath test can be carried out per day of testing. Plan at least 3 days between 2 breath tests (e.g. lactose and fructose).
This test is often not possible for children under 6 years of age (as children often do not drink the liquid completely or are not yet able to hold their breath sufficiently).
Patients with hereditary fructose intolerance must not undergo a fructose test (as severe symptoms may occur during the fructose test).
