Examination procedure

Therapy for food allergies or intolerances is highly individual and difficult to fit into a set framework. Since dietary changes represent a lifelong sacrifice for most allergy sufferers, the diet must be tailored specifically for and with the patients, or with the family, and should be integrable into daily life.

The goal of nutritional counseling is optimal diagnosis and treatment, as well as competent education and advice for affected patients and their families. Our nutrition team is available for any questions regarding diet (such as allergies, lactose intolerance, histamine intolerance, gluten sensitivity, celiac disease, infant and child nutrition, etc.).

Therapeutic diet

After the clear diagnosis of a food intolerance, the therapeutic diet is the most important measure in the treatment of the food intolerance. In the case of primary food allergies, this usually means strict avoidance of the allergenic food. In the case of cross-reactions to foods due to a pollen allergy, the avoidance may not need to be as strict, and certain amounts or preparation methods may be tolerated. For non-allergic food intolerances such as lactose intolerance, fructose malabsorption, or histamine intolerance, a three-step dietary adjustment is used to determine which food amounts can be individually tolerated. The exact implementation of a therapeutic diet is discussed in a nutritional counseling session. The focus is on a balanced and need-based diet with the goal of symptom relief and maintaining quality of life.

Diagnostic diet

A diagnostic diet is an important component of diagnosis when there is suspicion of food intolerances (e.g., suspected histamine intolerance). In this elimination diet, the suspected intolerant foods are avoided for a limited period, and a food symptom diary is kept. If symptoms improve, the clinical relevance can be confirmed, and a therapeutic diet can be initiated. Diagnostic diets are applied, for example, when there is suspicion of histamine intolerance or pollen-associated food allergies. The implementation of the elimination diet and the evaluation of the symptom diary are discussed in a nutritional counseling session.
